Education Program

VIDEO: A Day at School

The lack of resources in Senegal prevents many children from obtaining the education that their parents would hope for. Two thirds of children in the Fouta region do not advance beyond elementary school. Many of those who go on to high school are the first in their families to do so, and their parents, often unfamiliar with course material and unable to read and write the French language, are not able to help those children with their school work.

In a region where many live on less than a dollar a day, the cost of school supplies for the children can be out of reach for many families. Our Education Program puts school supplies, such as notebooks, pens, and pencils, directly in the hands of the students.

In addition, the funding provided by the government to schools to pay for educational materials is often insufficient to pay for more than a few copies of a given textbook to be shared by 30 or 40 students. Our Education Program provides materials such as textbooks, reference books, maps, and art supplies.

We continue to operate this program in the village of Kadiogne, and we have recently expanded this program to five additional neighboring villages.

Building a New
Community Center

We started construction of our new Community Education Center in the village of Kadiogne at the end of 2007, and the first phase of construction should be complete in time for the beginning of the Senegalese school year in October 2008. This community center will serve as an educational center for the village, and it will serve as our base of operations in the region. The classrooms in the center will provide additional space for the elementary school, which has had to turn away some students in recent years for lack of space, and they will house our after-school tutoring programs. Once completed, the center will also include a library, kitchen, office and storage room, and a shaded veranda.
